The year was 1996. The place, Lagos, Nigeria, and the organization was the National Broadcasting Commission. The words Africa, conference and broadcasting fused together in a thought cauldron and brewed the word Africast. This process of creation followed the crystallization of the idea of an international conference to regularly take a critical look at and suggestion approaches to issues relating to broadcasting as it relates to Africa.
The main objectives of the event were: (a) decolonizing our media theories and practices and indigenizing the industry; and (b) studying and strategizing for the deregulation of African broadcasting. Over the last five editions of Africast, the third and fourth reasons have become manifest; (c) providing a marketplace for broadcast technology; and (d) changing the perception of foreigners about Nigeria and Africa through hands-on interaction.
In the process of achieving these objectives, Africast has evolved four platforms of activity: The Conference, The exhibition and Market, the Programme Competition and the Veteran Awards.
The first Africast held in Abuja in 1996. The conference participants resolved to make it a biennial event, and since then it has taken place, with growing acceptance and reach in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2006. We are now preparing for the 7th edition scheduled for October 2008.
